General Overview
GKI Elim Tamoge
has a long-standing history deeply rooted in the spiritual and historical
journey of the people of Kuri Wamesa. Its existence bears witness to God's
unfailing guidance, leading His people from nothingness into being through His
love. The Word of God reached the communities of Kurube, Werianggi, and
Tatiorim, making them heirs of the land and territory of Kuri Wamesa—always
under His divine care.
The Beginning of Gospel Proclamation
The Gospel was
first proclaimed in this region in December 1909, when an ancestor from the
Kurube clan, Tonobanu (Christian name: Matius Kurube), visited his
brother-in-law in Windesi. There, he witnessed a Christmas celebration led by
missionary Jan Adrian van Balen and the Windesi congregation. The beauty of the
Christmas tree, the glow of candles, and the sound of bamboo flutes left a deep
impression on his heart. He longed to bring the same light of the Gospel to his
homeland.
Tonobanu
requested that missionary Jan Adrian van Balen send a Gospel teacher to
Werindiarni. This request was granted with conditions: the people had to stop
tribal warfare, abandon slavery, and commit to building a village and a place
of worship together. With great passion, Tonobanu returned home carrying
symbols of Christmas and the good news of the Gospel.
The Agreement of Three Clans
Upon his return,
Tonobanu reached out to two other clans—Werianggi and Tatiorim—to join in
receiving the Gospel. He visited ancestor Asumori of the Werianggi clan on
Tamoge Hill and ancestor Asiani of the Tatiorim clan on Yabakiori Hill. Despite
challenges, including internal family opposition, the three clans ultimately
agreed to accept the Gospel and requested a Gospel teacher.
A historic
gathering took place on the Wenikini River plain, about 500 meters from
present-day Werianggi Village. There, they tied three segments of rattan as a
symbol of their unity and commitment. Werianggi Village was chosen as the
communal settlement, and together they began constructing homes and a worship
house.
Congregational Development
The congregation
continued to grow in the spirit of faith inherited from their ancestors. Since
January 5th, the annual celebration of the Table of Fellowship has been
held to commemorate the unity and spiritual journey of the congregation.
On July 9, 2021,
the Emergency Church Building of Efata Werianggi was constructed in Tamoge by
the Chairperson of the Efata Werianggi Congregational Council, Bapa Guru
Johannis P. Ruhukail, who also served as a Member of the Working Body of the
Emerging Windesi Classis. Five months later, on November 10, 2021, the Efata
Werianggi Congregation in Tamoge received church equipment (pulpit, bell, and
sacramental items) and was consecrated by the Working Body of the Emerging
Windesi Classis. On that same day, the church bell rang for the first time in
the Passos area of Tamoge Village, symbolizing the beginning of congregational
worship activities.
The first Sunday
service in the emergency church building was held on November 14, 2021. A year
later, on October 24, 2022, the Efata Werianggi Congregation formally gave
birth to the GKI Elim Tamoge Congregation through the First Synod of Windesi
Classis. Theologically, however, the Gospel had already been proclaimed
earlier, forming the foundation of what would become GKI Elim Tamoge.
The peak of this
journey occurred on December 11, 2023, with the consecration of the Permanent
Church Building of GKI Elim Tamoge, officially established as a sacred house of
God—a place to worship, glorify, and serve the Creator.
